A Place I like to Stay
The Region of Bad Bleiberg, Austria
Take a deep breath. Let calm settle in. In Bad Bleiberg, this comes naturally.
Located near the tri-border area of Austria, Slovenia, and Italy, the village is nestled in a gentle alpine landscape that invites you to pause and turn inward.
BLEIB BERG F.X. Mayr Retreat blends seamlessly into its surroundings. Set at 920 metres above sea level, between Mount Dobratsch and the historic Erzberg, its location feels both grounded and elevated. A place of quiet strength. A setting that supports restoration simply by being where it is.
The History of Bad Bleiberg
The name of the Austrian market town of Bad Bleiberg carries a long history. For centuries, the village near Villach was shaped by the mining of lead and zinc. This heritage remains visible today – in the Terra Mystica mining museum and in the extensive tunnel systems, some of which are still accessible.
In 1951, however, the story of Bad Bleiberg took an unexpected turn. While miners were extracting lead as usual, they unintentionally drilled into a hidden treasure deep within the mountain: a thermal spring.
This moment of chance marked a new chapter. Thermal water with temperatures of up to 27 degrees Celsius began to flow, enriched with valuable trace elements and minerals. Over time, the former mining village evolved into one of Austria’s most respected places for healing and recovery – a place of natural strength.
Yet the legacy of mining goes beyond thermal water. Deep within the rock lies another space shaped by the mountain itself. A place that today supports regeneration and recovery in a very different way.

Regeneration Within the Mountain
Deep inside the mountain, Bad Bleiberg reveals a singular place in Carinthia, Austria – known far beyond the region: the healing climate tunnel “Friedrich”. Once part of active mining operations, it now serves a very different purpose – health.
Within the tunnel, temperatures remain constant at 8 to 9 degrees Celsius, with a humidity level of 99 percent. This unique environment offers relief for people with respiratory conditions, allergies, or stress-related complaints. The air is exceptionally pure, free from pollen, germs, and pollutants – acting as a natural therapeutic medium.
The microclimate inside the mountain has been medically studied and is now an integral part of recognised therapies. It represents a rare synthesis of natural power, centuries of history, and modern preventive medicine. Time spent in the tunnel not only supports lung health, but also offers a profound experience of silence. Those who breathe consciously can feel the change.

The Diversity of the Villach Region
The region surrounding BLEIB BERG F.X. Mayr Retreat is as compelling as Bad Bleiberg itself. Alpine panoramas, clear bathing lakes of drinking-water quality, and welcoming villages shape the landscape of the Villach region in Carinthia. A place defined by variety, ease, and natural beauty.
In and around Bad Bleiberg, numerous destinations invite exploration. The town of Villach, the ruins of Landskron Castle, the Affenberg Landskron, and many more. Sometimes, a change of scenery is exactly what supports renewal.
One such place is the Dobratsch Nature Park. The area around Mount Dobratsch bears the marks of ancient rockfalls that shaped distinctive formations such as the striking Red Wall. Here, gentle alpine meadows meet rugged stone. Over time, nature has created a landscape that feels both powerful and restorative. Since 2002, the Dobratsch has been recognised as one of Austria’s most impressive protected natural areas.
